Star Wars may have first appeared in 1977 but we reckon there can be few boys born in the many years since who have not insisted on at least one Star Wars lightsaber for christmas at one time or another. There are various Star Wars lightsabers available including the newest Star Wars The Clone Wars lightsabers. There are also Phantom menace and other movie tied in versions about. They all do pretty much the same thing, they light up and make zooming noises. There is even a replica lightsaber for really "big" kids which is a very close approximation of the actual movie props which apparently makes ultra realistic lightsaber buzzing noises when wielded. I haven't actually seen one of these "real" ones but they look brilliant (though too expensive and too fragile for younger Jedis).
Apart from the light saber, you also have a vast range of character toys and spaceships etc. so you can recreate any tattoine battle. Then there are Star Wars voice changers, Star Wars costumes and much more besides. The newer trilogy are being shown on television at the end of October and this is bound to stir some renewed interest in Star Wars for christmas (though the Clone Wars animated series is always on TV somewhere) so Star Wars are sure to be a top christmas toy for 2009 (and probably every year if we're honest!).
